The state raised the bar for energy efficiency for all new homes, resales or retrofits that receive financing from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. This applies to any home that gets a BEES certification, an estimated half of new housing in Alaska. The changes require homes to be 20-30% more energy efficient, which should save new homebuyers a combined $700,000 in energy costs the first year and an estimated $10 million over the life of the homes.
