Houses in the Bethel region are typically overcrowded, under-ventilated, and expensive to heat. The region spends more than twice as much on annual heating than Anchorage and three times the national average. New construction in Atmautluak will alleviate the housing shortage and provide low-energy, healthy homes. The prototypes are modeled to use 50 percent less energy than the average home in the village.
